Grinding
A metallographic specimen has to be cut from a larger piece of material. This process may cause damages and deformations of the specimens surface. The grinding process removes these deformations of the sample surface caused by sectioning. Grinding includes several steps using a series of abrasive papers with decreasing grit sizes. It starts with grinding of the mounted sample with an abrasive paper of high coarseness, which is indicated by a certain number. Each following step uses a finer paper (= higher number) to remove the scratches form the previous paper. Different ways of grinding are possible: vertical or horizontal disc grinding, belt grinding and hand grinding. After grinding with the paper of the finest coarse the sample is washed with water and alcohol, and than dried.
