Blooming
If a CCD is overexposed, that is, if the illumination exceeds the full-well capacity of the photodiodes in bright areas of the image, excess charges will overflow into adjacent wells and cause erroneously high intensities of the corresponding image pixels. This condition is called blooming. Many chip designs incorporate overflow drain structures to avoid this problem.
